How to Choose LED Bulbs in Dubai: A Complete Buyer's Guide

Buying LED bulbs in Dubai and the UAE differs from buying in Europe or North America. Voltage standards, climate conditions, and local product availability all affect what works well and what underperforms. This guide covers every factor you should check before buying.

Step 1: Confirm Voltage Compatibility

The UAE operates on 220–240V AC at 50Hz. Make sure any LED bulb you purchase is compatible with this voltage range. Look for bulbs rated 175–265V or 220–240V. Bulbs rated for 110V or 120V will not work on UAE mains power and may be damaged or unsafe.

Step 2: Choose the Right Base Type

  • E27 (Large Screw): Standard for most ceiling fixtures, floor lamps, and table lamps in UAE homes and offices. The most common fitting.
  • E14 (Small Screw): Used in chandeliers, wall sconces, and decorative pendant lights.
  • B22 (Bayonet): Sometimes found in older British-era buildings. Less common in newer UAE construction.

Step 3: Choose the Right Lumen Level

Lumens (lm) = brightness. Here is a simple guide for Dubai homes:

  • Bedroom: 400–800 lm per point
  • Living Room: 800–1350 lm for main fixtures
  • Kitchen: 1000–1350 lm for good task lighting
  • Bathroom: 500–800 lm
  • Outdoor Covered Area: 1000–3000 lm depending on size

Step 4: Choose Cold White or Warm White

Color temperature (CCT) is measured in Kelvin (K):

  • 3000K (Warm White): Best for bedrooms, living rooms, and restaurants. Relaxing and welcoming.
  • 6500K (Cool Daylight): Best for offices, kitchens, and commercial spaces. Alert and productive.

Step 5: Check Certifications

For UAE use, look for bulbs that carry CB certification (international safety standard), CE marking (European standard), and RoHS compliance (no hazardous materials). These indicate the product has been independently tested to safety and performance standards.
